Background of the Study
Interprofessional education (IPE) refers to a collaborative learning approach where students from different healthcare professions learn together, promoting mutual respect and understanding of the roles of various healthcare providers (Abubakar & Suleiman, 2024). In nursing education, IPE aims to enhance students' teamwork skills, communication abilities, and understanding of collaborative practice in healthcare settings (Michele & Aliyu, 2023). At Federal University, Dutse, IPE has been integrated into the nursing curriculum to prepare students for the multidisciplinary nature of modern healthcare (Olumide & Olamide, 2023).
Effective teamwork is critical in nursing practice, as it ensures optimal patient care and improves healthcare outcomes. However, traditional nursing education often focuses primarily on individual roles and responsibilities, leading to limited exposure to interdisciplinary collaboration (Ajayi & Abdullahi, 2023). IPE helps bridge this gap by creating opportunities for nursing students to engage with students from other healthcare disciplines such as medicine, pharmacy, and public health, promoting an understanding of each profession’s contribution to patient care (Sambo & Olamide, 2023).
This study seeks to evaluate the effectiveness of IPE in promoting teamwork skills among nursing students at Federal University, Dutse. By assessing the impact of IPE on students’ ability to collaborate in clinical settings, the study will provide insights into how interprofessional learning can enhance teamwork and improve patient care in nursing practice.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the importance of teamwork in healthcare, nursing education often emphasizes individual competence rather than collaboration. Federal University, Dutse has implemented IPE to address this gap, but there is limited research on its effectiveness in promoting teamwork skills among nursing students. This study seeks to evaluate the impact of IPE on nursing students' ability to work effectively in teams and provide recommendations for enhancing IPE in nursing education.
Objectives of the Study
1. To evaluate the effectiveness of interprofessional education in promoting teamwork skills among nursing students at Federal University, Dutse.
2. To assess the impact of IPE on nursing students' attitudes towards interdisciplinary collaboration.
3. To propose recommendations for improving IPE programs to enhance teamwork skills among nursing students.
Research Questions
1. How effective is interprofessional education in promoting teamwork skills among nursing students at Federal University, Dutse?
2. What impact does IPE have on nursing students' attitudes towards interdisciplinary collaboration?
3. How can interprofessional education programs be improved to further enhance teamwork skills in nursing students?
Research Hypotheses
1. Interprofessional education significantly improves teamwork skills among nursing students at Federal University, Dutse.
2. Nursing students who participate in IPE demonstrate more positive attitudes toward interdisciplinary collaboration than those who do not.
3. Enhancing IPE programs will improve nursing students' ability to work effectively in healthcare teams.
Scope and Limitations of the Study This study will focus on nursing students at Federal University, Dutse, and assess the effectiveness of IPE in promoting teamwork skills. Limitations include the potential influence of prior experiences with teamwork and the absence of long-term follow-up to assess the retention of skills gained through IPE.
